Gokyo Valley Trek is a popular and offbeat trek in Everest region. It is the unique adventurous trekking route of Nepal. The valley is situated towards the western part of Khumbu region. It is the valley of aquamarine glacial lakes. A Gokyo lake is a set of 19 high mountain lakes in Sagarmatha National Park. It is the world’s highest freshwater lake system at a height of 15400 ft- 16400 ft. This trek is a less crowded trekking destination. Gokyo Trek is also considered as one of the significant treks in the Everest region.
Gokyo trek starts with a 30-minute flight from Kathmandu – Lukla. The trek duration is 10- 15 days depending on trekkers. This trek takes you to the most beautiful part of the Everest region. The route follows the DudhKoshi River ascending to the Namche Bazar. Namche is the capital of the Sherpa community and also the trading center of the Khumbu region. The trail passes through rhododendron forests, lush forests, oak forests, snow-capped barren landscapes, alpine landscapes, and waterfalls.
You can see different plant species and wild animals. This trek also provides you the amazing highest mountain views of Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8511m), Makalu (8463m), Cho Oyu (8153m), Nuptse (7861m), Thamserku (6623m), and other mountains. The people living here are mostly Sherpa’s. You will also get to know about their lifestyle, culture, and tradition. During the short cropping season, few crops are grown. The occupation of people is yak herding and tourism.
You will also pass through Tengboche and Phortse villages. These villages are wonderful villages with lots of people from different ethnic groups, culture, tradition, and many more. You will also visit Tengboche monastery (3867m) is one of the biggest monasteries in Khumbu area where about 40 Tibetan Buddhist monks reside. It is situated on a hilltop with a stunning view of the Everest. Then the trek finally takes you to the Gokyo valley.
The Gokyo Ri (5530m) is the best viewpoint. You will see the 6 Gokyo lakes including Thonak Cho (161 acres), Gokyo Cho (106 acres), Gyazuma Cho (72 acres), Tanjung Cho (42 acres), and Ngojumba Cho (36 acres). The lake complex covers a surface area of 30 square miles. Instead of returning to Namche, you can also take the Renjo La Pass. This route is off the usual beaten track that gives you a memory of panoramic views of the Himalayan range.
The best time to trek Gokyo is in the spring season (March to May) and autumn season (September to November). The temperature is warm and the sky is clear in these months. Rhododendrons are in full bloom. You can also trek during monsoon and winter season but you must be prepared for difficulties.
You will not be able to see clear views. There are many teahouses where you can spend the night. You must be physically fit trek Gokyo valley. You will need a TIMS and Sagarmatha National Park permit while trekking.
